Francis of Assisi ( d. 1226) inspired the development of a vast and diverse spiritual movement that perdures to this day. In the wake of the life and canonization of Saint Francis. along with numerous literary hagiographical sources. eight extant vita icon images of the saint were produced during the thirteenth century in central Italy. The vita icon iconographic genre was introduced in the West with the production of these panel paintings that each include a central icon of the saint and a number of rhetorical narrative scenes depicting his life and posthumous miracles. When read for information. assisted by the methods of the discipline of art history. these images present not only a likeness of the life of the saint. but they also reveal a likeness of the developing. diverse spirituality of the nascent Franciscan movement. Each vita icon projects the spiritual interests. perspectives. and values of each local community that produced these works. and how they had appropriated the spirituality of the saint. Each image also serves as a significant witness to how this spiritual movement developed in that particular place and time. For the contemporary beholder these images impart presences of Saint Francis that have the capacity to serw as loci for transformative religious experience today in the lives of adherents of this spiritual tradition. and others. within the broader sphere of Christian spirituality. The aesthetic experience of beholding these images. when considered through the lens of theological aesthetics. also becomes self-transcendent religious experience. This religious experience becomes transformative of the beholders as they interpret the image of the saint and their own life in and through that presence of Saint Francis projected by the vita icon. When read for information and transformation the vita icons of Saint Francis are important sources for the Franciscan spiritual movement as it continues to develop and evolve.
