The purpose of this research study was to explore how guided reflection questions impacted self-confidence in clinical decision-making ability of entry-level athletic training students throughout a 10-week collision sport clinical experience. The researcher chose the qualitative approach to explore the concept of self-confidence in clinical decision-making ability as perceived by entry-level athletic training students, utilizing the phenomenological method for data collection and analysis. The method of investigation included nine one-on-one semistructured interviews with students who participated in the guided reflection questions. The findings revealed that (a) there was a lack of self-confidence in clinical decision-making ability at the start of the clinical experience; (b) this lack of self-confidence in clinical decision-making ability impacted communication with key stakeholders; (c) the role of goal setting and reflecting on set goals was helpful to increase self-confidence in clinical decision-making ability; (d) reflection via self-reflection, written reflection, and oral reflection with a preceptor increased self-confidence in clinical decision-making ability; and (e) there was an increase in self-confidence in clinical decision-making ability at the end of the 10-week clinical experience, which impacted the ability to take initiative in evaluating injuries, communicate with key stakeholders, triage, and make return-to-play decisions. The current study provides several suggestions for educators and preceptors to improve clinical experiences for athletic training students. The value of mock scenarios with standardized patients and creating more opportunities for students to make independent decisions are discussed in regard to future research.
