The majority of concussion [also referred to as 'mild traumatic brain injury' (mTBI)] literature stems from research on male participants, with limiting data separating gender in the analysis (Hirschberg, Weiss, & Zafonte, 2008). As a result, little is known about female concussions (Munivenkatappa, Agrawal, Shukla, Kumaraswamy, & Devi, 2016). More recently, however, research has documented a gender discrepancy in concussions (Muniventatappa et al., 2016). Adolescent female athletes have higher concussion rates than males in sports played by both sexes, with a longer duration for recovery, and increased severity of symptoms (Covassin, Moran, & Elbin, 2016; Kutcher & Eckner, 2010; Lincoln et al., 2011). While there are treatments for adolescent athletes with concussion, there is a lack of specialized intervention for treating the wide range of issues related to female adolescent athletes. The purpose of this research project is to provide a critical review of the literature concerning gender differences pertaining to sports related concussions in female adolescent athletes, identify treatment gaps in the literature, and provide recommendations for best practices in treating this population. The goal is to help provide coaches working with this population with targeted recommendations in order improve the treatment and recovery of adolescent female athletes.
