This research examines the relationship between emotional intelligence (EQ) and voluntary employee turnover intention in a public service organization. The ability model of emotional intelligence as measured using the Mayer-Salovey-Caruso Emotional Intelligence Test (MSCEIT) v2.0 was utilized to measure the level of emotional intelligence among managers. Voluntary employee turnover intention was measured using the Turnover Intention Scale 6-question version (TIS6) among employees. Fifty-two employees who were identified as direct reports to 10 managers who completed the MSCEIT comprised the group studied. The study found a weak inverse relationship between the manager's Total EQ and the voluntary turnover intention of the direct report employees when not controlling for employee sex or employee sex and manager sex. Results did indicate a moderate, inverse relationship between the reasoning area score and the voluntary turnover intention when not controlling for employee sex or employee sex and manager sex. There was no significant relationship between the experiential area score and voluntary turnover intention. The results of this study support previous empirical research findings related to emotional intelligence, even though there is limited research in the area of public service organization employees. This research contributes empirical support to the relationship of emotional intelligence and voluntary employee turnover intention.
