This study examined followers' perceptions of preferred leadership styles in various contexts ranging from crisis to routine. Using military leadership and follower response in a varied contexts, the purpose of this study was to analyze how contextual considerations demand flexibility in leadership style, especially when confronting crises or disruptions. While placing special emphasis on high stress crises, this study compared combat encounters, routine patrol, and basic training as it explored preferred leadership practices from the perspective of subordinates. This research drew from the responses of active U.S. Marines, with the purpose of learning from followers the qualities they look for in their leaders when faced with difficult decisions under pressures of uncertainty and high stakes. This study captured followers' perception on six leadership styles: Visionary, Coaching, Affiliative, Democratic, Pacesetter, and Commanding based on the work by Goleman, Boyatzis, and McKee (2004). A Multi-Variant Analysis of Variance (MANOVA) was conducted to analyze the effect of combat context on perception of preferred leadership. This study provides foundational support that not all leadership styles were effective under different military engagement contexts, as different engagement contexts call for different preferred leadership styles. A practical benefit of this research would be the development of contextualized leadership model to provide advice to business managers and crisis responders charged with making quick, on-the-ground decisions under conditions of severe disruption or even existential threat.
