Organizational leaders continue to seek ways to maximize their workforce. Generational differences in the workplace and employees' perceptions of meaningful work are two areas to help organizational leaders in that endeavor. The study investigated generational differences in definitions of meaningful work among the cusp cohorts of Gen X and Millennials and between sexes. Three research questions guided the study: What are the generational differences in definitions of meaningful work among the cusp cohorts of Gen X and Millennials and between sexes? To what extent are there significant generational differences in definitions of meaningful work among the cusp cohorts of Gen X and Millennials? To what extent are there significant generational differences in meaningful work between sexes in the cusp cohort of Gen X and Millennials? The research also examined differences between sexes within the cusp cohorts. The quantitative nonexperimental survey approach focused on determining the differences between Gen X and Millennial Cuspers in the U.S. workforce regarding their perception of meaningful work. SurveyMonkey provided the sample frame using simple random selection to identify potential participants, from a pool of 23,000 met the inclusion criteria. Responses from 211 U.S. based employees in various professional, semi-professional, and non-professional occupations were used to conduct the data analysis. Participants completed the comprehensive meaningful work scale (CMWS). An ANOVA was used as the method of analysis. The results indicated no significant differences in definitions of meaningful work between individuals of Gen X and Millennials on the cusp of their generation or between sexes. Future recommendations include the use of a qualitative methodological approach, longitudinal studies, and multiple data points to explore intergenerational differences and how generations may effect change in the workplace.
