In the midst of ongoing changes within organizations, industries, and the makeup of employee populations, there is still a certain degree of tension between the business leaders and the training departments that support them. In companies that have managed to establish, maintain, and continuously develop a true partnership between learning and development teams and the core business units, the results seem better and the tension decreases. However, there is still an opportunity for training departments to design and implement tools, environments, and programs that can help guarantee the existence of leaders that are ready for new challenges when these challenges appear. This study looks at the stories shared by 13 different leaders within a large academic medical center in the northeastern United States. Careful analysis of these stories revealed the existence of 11 themes that all seemed to support the existence of three common ideas: hesitation or fear about their readiness to jump into leadership, accompanied by doubt and self-criticism, a certain drive that helped them ensure their voice was heard and their experience respected, and finally, finding peace with who they were and focusing on leading others. Ideas for further research as well as application of key findings include the expansion into other industries, as well as understanding the many sides of the academic medical center entity.
