This research explores the impact of Medicaid on access to healthcare in the United States. Access to healthcare is measured at three different levels (access to physicians, access to basic healthcare and access to specialized healthcare). The control variables utilized in this study came from the Andersen Behavioral Model (ABM) of health services use. ABM fits well with Medicaid because the model allows for easy analysis of sub-groups in the larger population. Overall the available evidence supports the conclusion that Medicaid improves access to healthcare in the United States. Further evidence supports the conclusion that Medicaid improves access to healthcare, but there are meaningful differences between groups and across measures by utilizing a logit regression model and computing the average marginal effect of having Medicaid versus no insurance to determine the predictive probabilities of Medicaid on access to healthcare.
