Federal and state legislation requires schools to create and implement family engagement policies. Previous research reveals Latino students experienced academic achievement when schools had successful parental involvement. Yet, California experiences a persistent achievement gap with Latino students. Social media offers potential leverage for improving parental involvement between schools and predominantly Latino parent populations. This qualitative case study explored one school's social networking sites through a content analysis. Six Latino parent participants with social media experience were interviewed to assess their perspectives regarding social media as an effective communication tool. This study found that parents have communication challenges, preferences, and concerns. This study also had minimal representation of parents in its social networking sites and shared professional networking and community partnerships. This research concludes parents believe social media can enhance home-school partnerships, and if used effectively, can improve parental involvement.
