Professional development is a tool used by student affairs within American higher education professionals for personal and professional growth. Within the diverse sector of student affairs, there are many ways to engage in professional development that focus specifically on each department's specific needs. The current study interviewed residence life professionals regarding their use of professional development in the workplace and conceptualized what those professionals learned from engaging in professional development activities. Utilizing components of John Biggs' (1996) theory of constructive alignment, this qualitative, multiple-case research study focused on understanding how individual residence life professionals applied the knowledge they gained from professional development with internal and external constituents and themselves. In addition, this study explored the factors that contribute both to the pursuit of professional development opportunities by residence life professionals and the subsequent professional development implementation.
