This thesis poses questions concerning implicit hierarchies within language, looking at how it functions as a social and cultural barrier that subverts communication. By reducing text to symbols and units, rearranging text and using blank spaces on the page as signifiers, Theresa Hak Kyung Cha allows the viewer-reader to experience visual, written, and oral interactions beyond the boundaries of grammatical structure. Her radical approach to liberation (thus, redemption), through the use of poetry as a narrative entry allows diasporic subjects the political agency to work within and without the systems around them.Subjects--Topical Terms:
