This study investigated the potential benefits of thinking reflectively in reference to professional performance, and assessed the current use of reflective thinking among school principals. This project has three major components. The first is a scholarly report developed from a review of literature. The focus of the report is to explore the evolution of the concept of reflective thinking, and examine the present status of reflective thinking in the professions. A definition of the terms reflective thinking and reflective thinking activity, the importance of thinking reflectively, historical and theoretical underpinnings for reflective thinking, contemporary training models having reflective thinking as an integral element in the program, and aids to reflective thinking were given consecutive consideration. The second component, oriented towards educational leadership, is a report of the findings of the survey questionnaire. The survey was designed to ascertain the current use of reflective thinking activities among randomly selected public school principals in the state of Washington. The final component of the project is the creation of A Reflective Leader Development Model. The purpose of the model is to provide a standard against which an educational leader can gauge the use of reflective thinking activities in comparison with others in the field. A host of reflective thinking activities, derived from the review of literature, are provided so that individuals or groups interested in professional growth may draw from a comprehensive menu of reflective thinking activities. In addition to surfacing a comprehensive listing of aids to reflective thinking, reflective thinking activities most frequently used by principals were another major finding.Subjects--Topical Terms:
