Reading is often perceived to be a flawless process, but it is susceptible to failure, and avenues to failure may be dependent on reading ability determined by individual differences in factors like vocabulary size. This experiment observed reading errors and manipulated rapid serial visual presentation of target words, presented for 250 or 50 ms, that were congruent or incongruent to sentence context. The results showed that lower vocabulary size, assessed through a GRE vocabulary test, predicted reliance on context to determine the identity of words presented for 50 ms. Furthermore, analyses of eye movement patterns during a visual world paradigm choice task indicated that participants with lower vocabulary size were unsure of target word identity in contrast to higher vocabulary size participants. From eye movement timelines, it is likely that low vocabulary size participants made contextual guessing errors, while higher vocabulary size participants misperceived words, but made errors less frequently.
