Health professionals advocate that children and adolescents engage in 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity daily. It is well known that increased physical activity improves overall fitness and consequentially, enhanced health. Schools, particularly physical education classes are an ideal setting to implement and promote physical activity as a way of healthy living. Unfortunately, the quantity of time spent in PE classes has been on the decline since the early 2000s. The purpose of this quantitative quasi-experimental pretest-posttest design using archived data, was to investigate the impact of wearing heart rate monitors in PE class, on improved cardiovascular fitness and physical activity levels of ninth-grade students. The second purpose of the study was to determine the amount of time spent in moderate to vigorous physical activity (MVPA) during PE class. The 242 participants for this study were ninth-grade PE students during the 2017-18 school year. Quantitative analysis using a One-Way ANOVA revealed a significant difference between the groups using the One-Mile Run/Walk F (1, 240) = 61.385, p = .000; but was not significant for the PACER, F (1, 240) = 0.943, p = .332. The data demonstrated that all experimental group participants made improvements in both tests, while only 97% of the control group made improvements for the One-Mile Run/Walk and 85% improved their PACER scores. The ANOVA for the second research question was significant, F (17, 6616) = 86.98, p = .000. Hence, the null hypothesis stating that there were no significant differences in the time spent in the target heart rate zone when comparing the various PE units in the curriculum was rejected. The data demonstrated that 83% of the units in the PE curriculum engaged students in MVPA for 50% of the PE classes, which is one of the NASPE standards. Recommendations for future research would include using aerobic capacity scores rather than the One-Mile Run/Walk and PACER cardiovascular fitness assessment scores and continued research on MVPA in PE for curriculum development.
