My dissertation will study representations of Italian characters and their experience as immigrants in Brazilian literature and in Italian-language theater published in Brazil. By analyzing a selection of texts across periods and genres, I will consider the role literature plays in uncovering the social and historical processes involved in the cultural integration and social ascension of Italian immigrants in Brazilian society. Social histories on Italian immigration to Brazil provide factual and statistical data describing the migratory developments and the cultural, political, and economic contexts. What they lack, and what I argue is present in the literature I analyze, are the complex negotiations of identity and culture that occurred during their integration. An analysis of a variety of literary texts depicting Italians allows readers and critics to understand more clearly what their immigrant experience in Brazil was like, including their conflicts with cultural and national identity, as well as their struggles to simultaneously integrate into Brazilian society while maintaining an independent ethnic identity.
