The elements that define success in a typical corporation have parameters that usually focus on financial performance or value added to an investment portfolio. At an Alaska Native corporation, perhaps the word "success" takes on a different meaning entirely. While the design of the corporation is rooted in the individualistic values of Western societies, the Alaska Native corporate foundation is built upon the Indigenous values of the communal societies they serve. Success at an Alaska Native corporation can include a high-functioning board, despite that board's lack of independence, diversity and industry expertise. Success may also include a mindset of sharing through options like opening enrollment, an option that exemplifies the Indigenous values of the individuals these companies now serve. Like other corporations, financial success is also an element contained in the definition of success at an Alaska Native corporation; however, evaluating the financial statements and financial trends of these corporations is not easily accomplished. Establishing the tools necessary to track financial performance over an extended period of time is an essential component of tracking the performance of these entities. This dissertation explores three key elements in an Alaska Native corporation: the board of directors, opening enrollment and the financial performance of these dynamic Indigenous organizations. The Indigenous research methods utilized in the analysis of these elements calls for a cultural sensitivity to Alaska's First People when examining these entities. In the end, defining success is not definitively addressed as the Alaska Native corporations create a new definition of success, a definition that includes the Indigenous values of the people they serve.
