Most modern communities in Beijing were built in the 1980s or even earlier. Concepts for urban planning at that time lacked humanistic, sustainable or ecological design. Many urban communities have no public spaces or modern facilities designed for residents. In addition, a lack of environmental and sustainable design areas for green spaces were quite small. My research focuses on discovering what kind of public spaces these communities need to improve social interaction, identifying the characteristics and the problems existing in modern residential areas in Xicheng, Beijing, and developing possible design solutions to address existing problems. This design project aims to design public parks for local residents in modern residential areas of Xicheng District, Beijing, in order to activate the local communities and also try to make a more sustainable and ecological community. Furthermore, methods for this project are preference surveys with local residents, site analysis, case study, and site design.
