Social media platforms have become one of the most often used methods of communication of today. Networking sites such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Snapchat, and the list goes on, offers a portal to entertainment, information, and news by the second. These various modes of access mandate social media integration being woven into the fabric of mankind's interactions with one another. Social media usage has become an aggressive consumer phenomenon considerably changing the nature of what is considered normal interactions. While their impact in various fields has been explored, this study aimed to examine the effects of social media use on student's academic patterns as well as whether there is a positive correlation between excessive use and socially related behaviors. The study illuminated the current viewpoints of students from a Central Texas Historically Black College/University Huston-Tillotson University in Austin, TX on social media's full potential as both a networking tool and an instructional tool. Findings showed that students are impacted by their social media use in both positive and negative ways. The impact social media use has depends upon the students, their individual ability to focus, and their knowledge of how to use social media for academic purposes. Findings also showed that students are open to the idea of social media's inclusion into their academic curriculum and some are already using it as a supplemental tool. Today, a study such as this is critical to determining students' honest perception of their daily online habits. With technology spreading more rapidly each year, and the user becoming younger and younger, the changes becomes more pronounced much sooner. A quantitative approach was employed in this research. The results demonstrated that the sample of 13-24-year-old Huston-Tillotson University students, given the top researched choices of Twitter, Snapchat, and Instagram, prefer Twitter over all other social media platforms mostly to engage with their peers socially. Findings suggested that future research should consider the mental state of mind of students and how social media contributes to that versus their cumulative GPA as evidence of academic performance. The relevance of this research recommended that instructors should actively incorporate the benefits of social media into the academic curriculum instead of completely shunning its use by students.
