With roughly 90% of adults and children having had contact with a healthcare professional in the United States in 2015 alone, having a well-designed healthcare environment that does not leave inhabitants vulnerable to experiencing anxiety or stress is a topic that needed to be discussed ("Ambulatory Care Use and Physician Office Visits," 2017). The purpose of this research study was to explore the design elements of the built environment in a healthcare facility. In addition, this phenomenological, qualitative study brought attention to healthcare environments many people inhabit. By understanding how the characteristics of the indoor environment affect human health and wellbeing, the researcher was then be able to determine a beneficial healthcare environment design. The qualitative approach utilized in this research study allowed the researcher to better understand the different aspects of an interior space that help reduce anxiety for patients and their families in a healthcare environment. In addition, the study assisted in illustrating the variables involved in the process of designing an anxiety reducing healthcare environment.
