This study analyzes the role of the media in the relationship between Catalonia and Spain, a prototypical case study for secessionism among developed countries. Framing and discourse theory inform a content analysis to answer the following research questions: (1) How do national media construct Catalan identity in Spain? (2) How do national media construct Spanish identity in Spain? (3) How do Catalan regional media construct Spanish identity in Catalonia? (4) How do Catalan regional media construct Catalan identity in Catalonia? (5) How is the secessionist movement framed in both nation-wide and Catalan media? The analysis focuses on news at three milestones in Spain's history: The autonomic pacts in 1981, which informed the current distribution of central and regional powers; the secessionist demonstration in 2012, which resulted in the Catalan government's taking a pro-independence stance; and the ISIS terrorist attacks in Catalonia in 2017, which elevated the political tension between administrations.

520 $a Este estudio analiza el papel de los medios en la relacion entre Cataluna y Espana, un caso de estudio prototipico de secesionismo en paises desarrollados. Las teorias del discurso y de framing informan un analisis de contenido para responder las siguientes preguntas: (1) ¿Como construyen los medios nacionales la identidad catalana en Espana? (2) ¿Como construyen los medios nacionales la identidad espanola en Espana? (3) ¿Como construyen los medios regionales catalanes la identidad espanola en Cataluna? (4) ¿Como construyen los medios regionales catalanes la identidad catalana en Cataluna? (5) ¿Como se enmarca el movimiento secesionista en los medios nacionales y catalanes? El analisis se centra en las noticias en tres hitos en la historia de Espana: los pactos autonomicos en 1981, que informaron la distribucion actual de los poderes centrales y regionales; la manifestacion secesionista en 2012, que provoco que el gobierno catalan adoptara una postura independentista; y los ataques terroristas de ISIS en Cataluna en 2017, que elevaron la tension politica entre las administraciones.
