Preparation for nursing practice has evolved from early training programs to university-based baccalaureate educational programs. Since the beginning, preparation for practice as a registered nurse has changed and matured. This process has created discourse and challenges to be addressed by nursing scholars, leaders and practitioners. Initial training for nursing practice was associated with hospital-based programs. Later, nurses' education was associated with community college and university-based education. These inconsistencies have continued into present times and are responsible for numerous modern dilemmas. Most importantly, current evidence-based literature documents disparity in patient outcomes related to education and method of nurses' education. The purpose of this interpretive phenomenological inquiry was to gain a more thorough understanding of lived experiences of non-baccalaureate prepared nurses in pursuit of baccalaureate degrees. Through data analysis of semi-structured interviews, common themes and sub-themes were identified. Important themes identified include Positive and Negative Feelings Associated with BSN Education, Value of Lived Experiences from Completing BSN Education and Obstacles and Challenges Associated with BSN Completion. Additionally, valuable sub-themes identified include Person and Group Related Lived Experiences, Unanticipated Experiences and Identification of Internal and External Prejudices. Lastly, the final sub-themes Valuable Supportive Mechanisms and Lessons Learned were also identified in the study population. From themes identified through data analysis, novel information was obtained facilitating recommendations for nursing scholars, leaders and practitioners. This new information supports development of mechanisms and interventions to support non-baccalaureate prepared nurses through baccalaureate completion activities.
