Diabetes education plays a critical role in understanding and managing the disorder. Structured, group-based education provides the format needed to enhance patients' knowledge. The purpose of this quantitative, quasi-experimental project was to determine if the implementation of a group-based educational session using the Novo Nordisk educational materials would impact the fasting blood glucose, hemoglobin A1C, and knowledge, attitude, and behaviors in patients with diabetes mellitus type II. Theories by Callista Roy and Imogene King provided structure for the intervention to help improve delivery based on patients' needs. The clinical questions were if there was a reduction in hemoglobin A1C and fasting blood glucose levels, and increases in the knowledge, attitude, and behaviors of participants after receiving structured, group-based education led by a nurse compared to the previous in-office practice. The project location was a family practice in Georgia, with an ending sample size of six. The project used a quantitative methodology with a quasi-experimental design for comparing pre-and post-intervention hemoglobin A1C, fasting blood glucose, and knowledge, attitude, and behaviors of patients with descriptive statistics. The investigator performed data analysis using a paired t-test of pre-and post-intervention data. Data results showed reduced fasting blood glucose (p = 0.003) and hemoglobin A1C (p = 0.02), and increased knowledge, attitude, and behaviors (p = 0.000) post-intervention. The implication is that using structured, group-based education improves patients' outcomes.
