Background: Shoulder pain has a high lifetime prevalence in the general population, and one of the most common underlying mechanisms is subacromial impingement syndrome (SAIS). Exercise therapy (ET) has been shown to be effective in the treatment of SAIS. Kinesio tape (KT) is an easily accessible adjunct to exercise that can be used to treat SAIS. Purpose: The purpose is to determine the effectiveness of KT as an adjunct to ET in comparison to ET alone for individuals with SAIS in the improvement of pain relief and active range of motion (AROM) of the affected shoulder. Data Sources: Search procedures followed PRISMA guidelines using CENTRAL, CINAHL, MEDLINE, and ScienceDirect databases. Study Selection: Adults over the age of 18 diagnosed with SAIS with an intervention of either ET or KT and ET measuring pain on Visual Analog Scale (VAS) and shoulder AROM. Results: KT and ET was found to have an effect size of 0.05 to decrease pain and 0.56 to improve AROM when compared to ET alone. Conclusion: KT and ET did not demonstrate a further reduction in pain compared to ET alone. However, KT and ET may improve AROM in individuals with SAIS. Further quality studies need to be conducted to solidify the findings of this meta-analysis.
