This dissertation discusses the relationship between the Kuomintang, the ruling party in Taiwan, and the emerging autonomous social movements and civil associations from the early 1970s to mid-1980s. The theories of the state, authoritarian regimes, Leninism, corporatism, and the generalizations of democratization and liberalization will be evaluated in this study. Other than these theoretical discussions, various social movement will be analyzed in detail. They include the campus movement (including students and teachers); the consumer, environmental protection, and self-help movements; dissident churches (the Presbyterian and New Testament Churches); and dissident minorities (including mainlander veterans and the aborigines). These cases will be analyzed in theoretical and comparative perspectives. A comparative analysis of social movements and the state-society relationship in Taiwan will be concluded at the end of this study.Subjects--Topical Terms:
