Research indicates that the behaviors and characteristics of the psychotherapist have a significant impact on psychotherapist effectiveness and psychotherapy outcome, yet the person-of-the-therapist is rarely a focus of training in psychotherapy training programs. This study examines the use of person/self-of-the-therapist training approaches to increase psychotherapist effectiveness and improve treatment outcome. A selective literature review and critical analysis of data gathered from interviews with professional experts in the field were conducted, and results were applied to support a case for the implementation and standardization of person/self-of-the-therapist training methods across psychotherapy training programs. Current methods and models for person/self-of-the-therapist training were reviewed, compared, and contrasted. Perceived obstacles to the implementation and standardization of person/self-of-the-therapist training across psychotherapy training programs were discussed, and solutions to these obstacles were presented. The culminating application was disseminated through a professional poster presentation. Preliminary qualitative research on the effects of person/self-of-the-therapist training on psychotherapist effectiveness and treatment outcome demonstrate promising results, and professional opinion assents that person/self-of-the-therapist training should become a standard across psychotherapy training programs and graduate school curricula.
