The purpose of the present study was to determine the relation between phonological awareness and awareness of stuttering in typically developing children. The phonological awareness of 20 typically developing 4-year-olds was assessed using the Phonological Awareness Test-2 (PAT-2). Participants also viewed a video of two puppets, one speaking fluently and the other speaking nonfluently, and prompted to answer questions to assess their awareness of stuttering as well as their negative evaluation of stuttering. Findings indicated that some aspect of children's phonological awareness was related to negative evaluation of stuttering, but not to awareness of stuttering. In addition, greater awareness of stuttering was found to be associated with greater negative evaluation of stuttering, and this association was stronger in children with higher phonological awareness. Findings were taken to suggest that children's phonological awareness may contribute to development of negative evaluation of stuttering.
