Zheng Zhenduo (1898-1958) was a key translator in the rise of modern Chinese literature. In his translations, Zheng Zhenduo explored the potential of social reform, fueling Chinese literature with ideological richness and realistic implication. Focused on Zheng Zhenduo's literary translations from 1917 to 1927, this thesis seeks to investigate the source of Zheng Zhenduo's idea of social reform and its representation in his translated works, thus shedding light on the relationship between literary translation and social transformation in general. Inspired by the "cultural school" in Translation Studies, this study attempts to use a variety of historical documents, such as archives, diaries, and correspondences of the people concerned, to describe both the historical situation facing Zheng Zhenduo and the translation strategies adopted. The main body of the thesis consists of four chapters. Chapter One provides a necessary background of the New Culture Movement and Zheng Zhenduo's personal contact with social reform. During his editorship of the journal Xin Shehui (1919-1920), Zheng Zhenduo mainly translated and accepted the theories advocated by the sociologist Franklin H. Giddings (1855-1931), whose proposals of personal reform, collective progress, and social education lay the foundation for his translations later. Chapter Two investigates Zheng Zhenduo's consideration of personal reform through his translation of Rabindranath Tagore's (1861-1941) prose poems. Influenced by Giddings's idea of "social man", Zheng Zhenduo highlighted the emotional forces, the philosophy of action, and the social nature of man in Tagore's poetics, as an attempt to release the social potential of individuals. With his translation of the long novel The Pale Horse, Chapter Three discusses Zheng Zhenduo's attitude toward collective progress. The translation offered a secular interpretation of the originally religious connotation and stressed the realistic implications of the protagonist George as an enlightener and a reformer. A dialogic relationship was also formed between Zheng Zhenduo's understanding of collective progress and other versions of social reform. By examining his translation of The History of Reynard the Fox in Chapter Four, the thesis asks how Zheng Zhenduo turned the English children's story into a Chinese critical social fable, thus emphasizing its allegorical and educational function. As he was forced to seek refuge abroad in 1927 because of participation in social protest, Zheng Zhenduo's early literary translations came to an end.
