Historically, African Americans have had difficulty finding spaces to call their own. Spaces where they feel safe, wanted, and free from any external judgement. In particular, throughout history and continuing today, African Americans have sought spaces where they feel free from the threat of police. This paper seeks to understand and examine police interactions with students who attend an HBCU vs those who attend a PWI. Of particular concern is how interactions with police affect the mental health, comfort levels on campus, and academic success of students and whether those effects differ by race and type of college attended (HBCU or PWI).
