This study aimed at exploring the existing models of research the students at one northeastern university in the United States are performing in composition courses. The current study examined the practices of fifteen (n=15) faculty members affiliated with an interdisciplinary English department as well as their perception of research. The participants were interviewed, and their syllabi and assignment sheets were analyzed for this study. The interview transcripts and teaching documents were analyzed thematically and utilized to reach plausible answers to the study's research questions. This study's research questions were focused on three main areas that provided a holistic view of the research experiences taking place in these courses, and some of the factors possibly determining the forms of these experiences.The research experiences for the students at composition courses at this university varied according to their professor's disciplinary conceptualization of research. The templates of the teaching handbooks inspired all the models of research found in these courses. These models ranged from assignments such as the research paper (which values learning the research process and producing knowledge that is new to the students) and the research projects (which values both the process and the final product of research that has the potential of producing knowledge that is new to the field). However, even that the participants in this study come from different disciplines and have different levels of training and research experiences, the majority of them favor the research paper assignment for reasons other than their perceptions of research. These reasons include the participants' views of research in these courses as introductory and as an optional skill for the students. Other factors include the participants' understanding of their students' attitudes and abilities as well as their perception of their abilities to utilize different research methodologies in these courses. Nevertheless, the participants' perceptions of research as a concept varied from their understanding of their students' research experiences in composition courses. For example, many participants considered research generally as an activity to create knowledge, but they did not necessarily believe that their students in composition courses were ready for the type of research they were doing themselves. The participants' understanding of their students' research experiences were mainly a reflection of how research was constructed in the teaching handbooks of these courses. Moreover, only five participants stated their dissatisfaction with their practices in these courses, whereas the majority expressed their content with the research assignments their students are doing. This study concludes by recommending more attention to students' research experiences in composition courses and more emphasis on the importance of undergraduate research for the students in the teaching handbooks of these courses especially Eng. 101. To include more authentic research opportunities in these courses, the study suggests providing training opportunities in interdisciplinary research methodologies to composition courses instructors, which will improve the application of undergraduate research experiences for the students from a range of majors and lighten the dominance of humanistic research traditions that can only be beneficial for specific students.
