National parks are vital public resources for the preservation of species and landscapes, and for decades have provided natural laboratories for studying environmental and cultural resources. Though significant scholarship has taken place in national parks, syntheses of research trends and biases are rarely available for needs assessments and decision making. My thesis closes this information gap for Congaree National Park (CNP) through a systematic review of research topics and funding sources of all peer-reviewed, published research conducted since its inception as a National Monument in 1976. I paired my evaluation of research trends with a spatial analysis of study locations to uncover biases in research topics. A total of 49 peerreviewed publications describing research conducted at CNP have been published since 1976, with over 75% published since 2003 when CNP was established as a National Park. Vegetation studies were the most common type of research published, followed by studies about invertebrates and human dimensions of natural resources. Quantitative studies accounted for nearly 90% of all studies, with the majority using observational/correlational research methods. Federal agencies funded the largest number of studies conducted, with the National Park Service providing the most financial support. My spatial bias analyses revealed significant clustering of studies near the park entrance, the visitor center, roads and hiking trails. Trends and biases in research uncovered by this study are being used by public officials and land managers to maximize the utility of past research and prioritize future research of understudied topics and locations.
