Studies show that spending time and participating in activities that take place in the natural environment are able to mediate the effects of negative health outcomes and have positive effects both on physical and mental health. This study examined the relationship between selected outdoor adventure recreation (OAR) activities and self-selected health promotion strategies. Self-selection strategies, or personal behaviors, are activities and visitation to selected locations (e.g., parks and other natural environments) for the deliberate acquisition of restorative and health-related outcomes such as reducing stress and enhancing a sense of wellness. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between individual motives to participate in a variety of popular OAR activities, specifically, mountain biking, rock climbing, and whitewater boating, and how individual participants see their self-selection of OAR activities influencing their personal health. Findings of this study suggest that some OAR activities support the prevention of negative health outcomes and enhance the improvement of overall health. This study provides several implications and applications for OAR use as a health intervention as well as provides an outline of potential future research on these topics. Furthermore, the study found and reports a variety of reasons for participation, identifying that OAR activities differ in regard to health promotion reasons as well as more general participation motives and outcomes.
