Revenge porn is the distribution of sexually explicit photos or videos of another person or people without their permission. This act is typically carried out as a means to intimidate and humiliate someone that has broken up a relationship. Although the act sounds immature, it can cause serious emotional distress and harm to the individual that falls victim to it. The damage is so devastating that more-and-more states have begun to recognize the need to pass laws that would criminalize revenge porn. For the most part, a large number of states have been successful when passing revenge porn laws despite the obstacles they have faced. Still, the success of passing a revenge porn law is unrelated to how effective the law will be after its passing. The obstacles that states had to face may have been the reason why revenge porn laws are flawed or limited to some degree. Unfortunately, there is little information and data to confirm this or to confirm how effective these revenge porn laws are. This does not mean states should abandon their pursuit when it comes to preventing revenge porn or giving up on the laws that could be protecting those from it.
