The notion of keeping up appearances is often meant to relate to one's personal relationships, business dealings, and ultimately ways in which people persuade others that they are operating from a place of competence and success. Because the process of psychotherapy encompasses nuances of many different types of relationships, it is essential for therapists to consider how their identity and expression inform the therapeutic process. Clinical applicability as it relates to the development of client rapport is explored. The therapist's personal style, utilization of glamour, and overall visual persuasion is analyzed and questioned throughout this work. Notions of race, gender, hegemony, and heteronormativity will also be discussed. A qualitative approach, as well as hermeneutic and heuristic methodologies, were employed to answer the question, How does the therapist's physical appearance, and use of glamour in particular, impact the process of psychotherapy?
