Multi-section semiconductor distributed feedback (MS-DFB) laser has shown superior performance in terms of its spectral purity, single longitudinal mode operation, high speed, and wide tuning range. Therefore, it has become a promising key-element for optical communication systems. It can be used as a tunable light-wave source or a wavelength converter of a wavelength division switch. It can also be designed as a self-pulsating laser for clock recovery in a bit-rate transparency optical network. The analysis of multi-section DFB lasers is very complicated. Most of the analysis techniques used so far do not rigorously consider the reflection between the various sections. Nevertheless, these reflections determine the carrier and photon distribution, and influence all aspects of performance including the dynamic and noise response of the device. This thesis presents a comprehensive treatment using a novel transmission line model for multi-section semiconductor lasers. Using this approach, a multi-segment DFB laser is described by an equivalent transmission-line network, where each section of the device is represented by a transmission line segment with a corresponding characteristic impedance. The two end facets of the device, including any possible coatings, are represented by corresponding effective loads. Random noise fluctuations set up by the spontaneous emission is described by random current sources distributed along the cavity. The rate equations of the phase deviation and the photon density are reformulated using this model. Langevin noise of carrier density, photon density and field phase deviation are introduced into the rate equations and discussed. Static, dynamic and noise analyses are carried out. The lineshape of multi-section DFB laser are calculated and plotted for the first time to our knowledge.
