Health information exchange has become a more prominent issue in recent years. Thus far, efforts have focused on moving records between providers; however, in recent years there has been a push towards including patients in this process. Efforts are underway exploring the use of blockchain-based systems to create a more patient-centric environment wherein patients would be the controllers of their own health data. Blockchain-based systems can redistribute the trust between parties within the system by removing the need for a trusted third party to facilitate these transactions. The classic example of this is the usage of blockchain to eliminate the need for a bank to record transactions between parties. This thesis explores how blockchain systems can be implemented, the potential challenges of adoption, the possible benefits to HIE that come from their usage, and how blockchain could be used in future HIE environments.
