There has been a growing interest in using carbon pricing (part of Market-based Mechanisms) as a tool to reduce carbon emission in international shipping. However, there are limited academic studies on the topic. This Master's Thesis will discuss the quantitative effects of the two most common forms of carbon pricing, the carbon tax and the cap-and-trade system. The Thesis will explore how such measures might alter the market dynamics in international shipping due to variation in voyage speed, fuel-related costs, freight rates and fleet size. Questions of carbon market volatility (under a cap-and-trade system), global emission variations (under a carbon tax system), and the adoption of new technologies due to carbon pricing, will also be discussed. Our model presents analytical results, under a long-term economic equilibrium.
