Pallets have been around since the early 1900's. Often times being overlooked, they have changed the material handling industry. Their evolution was quick through the years and it wasn't long before the modern pallet was established. Being able to hold over 2000lbs is a perk that comes with it comes with the ease to maneuver without any heavy machinery (LCN, 2008). Wood being the number one material of pallets, pallet manufacturing, repairs and modifications came easily. With the manufacturing of pallets come wood waste. Many of this wood ends up in landfills having an impact in the environment. Good practices and research could be made to reduce the waste and a goal could be made to recycle it.Waste management should be a top priority for any manufacturing facility. Process optimization studies will not only aid in identifying flaws in the process, but will reveal problematic areas in the production of waste. Simulation by software make analysis of a process easy. Once problems are identified, proposed implementations could be simulated saving money, time, and achieve optimal results. An implementation of the production of a byproduct could be simulated as well in order to solve waste accumulation.This study is aimed to identify problematic areas of production of waste in a local pallet manufacturing company. Along the way, possible proposed modifications to the facility and process will be made in order to get optimal results. The process will be analyzed using Arena simulation software. The possible implementation of the production of biochar will be analyzed as a byproduct using the waste produced in the facility.Keywords: Arena, waste management, process optimization, pallets, biochar.
