Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel's philosophy on aesthetics shaped the way art created throughout time was viewed in a diachronic way and established the study of Art History as an academic discipline. Hegel's theory of the Absolute Idea, or Geist, is said to be the metaphysical driving force that transcends a work to be more than its visual or physical representation- in other words the essence of what elevates an object to be considered art. The Absolute Idea is thought to be continually acting in history through different means of expression depending on the specific time period, which is apparent through the many evolving styles and movements of art. The methodology of the Absolute Idea, being developed during the nineteenth century, will be applied to an artist's work of the twentieth century, Edward Kienholz. The art created by Kienholz during the Modern Era is notorious for being extremely progressive in process and visuality, evoking highly controversial and subliminal messages about politics and race.
