There are approximately 195 countries in the world, each with their own ethnic traditions including music, art, and literature. Why then does current clarinet pedagogy draw mainly from Western European cultures? This thesis will use traditional folk music from around the world to help young clarinetists build strong fundamentals, while also instilling an appreciation of diverse musical cultures. Specifically, "A Cultural Approach to Teaching Clarinet Fundamentals," will address basic challenges such as embouchure, hand and finger position, crossing the break, tone control and dynamics, and articulation. All of those concepts will be addressed through exercises based on a wide selection of folk songs from different countries. This paper will use the author's personal experience as a student and teacher. In both settings, the author came to realize that most students become deeply engaged and eager to learn when they familiarize themselves with the culture and the ethnic group that is behind the music that they are studying. The specific excerpts and/or folks songs used in this thesis have been adapted for the B♭ soprano clarinet.
