This dissertation investigates site-specific choreographic practices in Euro-American Screendance from the 1990s to the present. Through thematically organized chapters, I examine the visual and physical impact landscapes, urban and industrial spaces have on the dancing body and in turn how the body's relocation outdoors can change the way we view space. I propose the idea of material-specificity to urge artists to create choreography for raw materials such as mud, water or concrete, in the tradition of other plastic arts, as a means to connect dance to non-theatrical environments. I also explore the ways in which Screendance practitioners misuse and repurpose urban and architectural spaces. By reconsidering the link between bodies and their surroundings on film this study aims to spark new approaches to designing movement on-location and to produce rich sensorial dance films. This cross-disciplinary project also considers the spaces of exhibition for dance films, surveying specialized film festivals, museum exhibitions and online platforms to consider the ways in which curators can mobilize viewing environments for Screendance and the moving-image more broadly.
