This thesis addresses the research question of: How does the Holy Ground Spiritual Movement coincide with the theory, concepts, and principles of Indigenous Ways of Knowing as reflected in the literature and through participant observation by the author? Indigenous Ways of Knowing is a term that is often expressed as an indigenous worldview. It is looks at the world through a different lens to bring understanding in the epistemology and ontology of indigenous people. By studying a unique spiritual movement that occurred in the late 1800s among the White Mountain Apache, it illustrates a new way of understanding an important cultural and spiritual event. This event illustrates that there is a connection between man and the environment. There is a relationship that exists that can be beneficial or consequential based on interpretation. There is "power" in all things and the Holy Ground Movement provides an illustration of how contemporary religious rites are incorporated into a modern movement while utilizing indigenous beliefs rituals. The knowledge and understanding gained by examining this relationship can improve the relative knowledge gap that exists in human relationships with one another and the living world.
