This dissertation is about the manipulation of landscapes for political purposes. Residents of Chaco Canyon, in modern northwestern New Mexico, defined their position in the cosmos by concretely demarcating their relationship with the known material world. They also defined their relationship with other peoples, especially those living in the Northern San Juan. In the late eleventh century of the common era, Chacoans enfolded these communities into a developing Chacoan polity to craft a regional-scale, balanced ritual landscape with Chaco Canyon at its center. They replaced the existing landscape infrastructure of northern outlier communities with a new one that defined those communities in a temporal relationship to Chacoan history, which was writ large on the San Juan Basin landscape. This dissertation is also about a mode of political power distinct from elite aggrandizement, martial violence, or control of production. Drawing on a political model from the Indigenous sovereignty movement, I argue that Chacoans manipulated landscapes, ceremonies, histories, and subjectivities to define a condition of shared "peoplehood" across the northern Southwest. While not exactly a state in the anthropological sense of the term, the result was a sovereign entity in which people viewed themselves as members of a larger political affiliation. This condition of sovereignty was never uncontested, however, and did not last more than two or three generations. The Chacoan political project collapsed by 1130 CE; Chacoan subjectivities were redefined across the northern Southwest in smaller, local terms by the later twelfth century.
