The purpose of this quantitative causal-comparative research was to determine if there is a difference between online and campus-based undergraduate college students for civic attitude and behavior at a four-year university in the greater Phoenix area. The citizenship and social capital theories provided the theoretical foundation to address the two research questions in this research study: What, if any, difference exists between online and campus-based undergraduate college students for civic attitude, and what, if any, difference exists between online and campus-based undergraduate college students for civic behavior. Using the two subscales within the Civic Engagement Scale there were 504 total responses and N = 448, n = 76 campus-based students and n = 372 online students were usable. The result of the independent samples t-test analysis of RQ1 was significant based on an alpha value of .05, t(446) = -3.57, p < .001. The result of the independent samples t-test analysis of RQ2 was significant based on an alpha value of .05, t(446) = -4.29, p < .001. The mean civic attitude and civic behavior values were significantly higher for online students in comparison to campus-based students. These results are inconsistent with prior research and studies that have demonstrated that the college campus atmosphere increases social capital in students and increases in social capital leads to higher civic attitude and behavior. This dissertation adds scientific knowledge to the fields of higher education, social capital development, and civic engagement research.
