The purpose of this study was to seek an understanding of how collegiate coaches manage and optimize their relationships while dealing with the stress from their profession. Previous research indicated that the stress from a demanding work environment can lead to negative responses in employees such as irresponsible behavior, decreased efficacy, and poor coping behaviors. NCAA Division I and II collegiate coaches are under tremendous amounts of workplace-related stress and may feel the impact of stress on their professional as well as family relationships. The sample for this generic qualitative study were 10 NCAA Division I and II coaches from the four geographical regions throughout the United States. Five head coaches and five assistant coaches representing six different sports answered open-ended questions in semi-structured interviews. Thematic analysis yielded six themes: (a) a work environment conducive to family values assists coaches in managing work and family conflict, (b) coaches feel a responsibility to foster coach-athlete relationships, (c) coaches are proactive and responsible for their own coping methods, (d) having an understanding and supportive spouse and family is necessary to balance professional and familial responsibilities, (e) coaches who do not prioritize family can damage relationships and experience regret, and (f) salary influencing the stress of coaches. Most participants mentioned their reliance on spirituality to guide decisions, faith as a means to balance work and family conflict, and fitness as a recurring tool to combat the demands of the job. Coaches also described the benefits of improving spousal communication, adhering to schedules, and prioritizing family time over work responsibilities. The findings may inspire dialogue regarding advocacy for coaches and family systems.
