The goal of this research is to further understand the necessary conditions for construal level theory to positively impact self-control success. Construal level theory suggests that people represent objects and events at different levels of abstraction (CLT; Trope & Liberman, 2003). High-level construal, relative to low-level construal, promotes self-control success (e.g. Fujita, Trope, Liberman, & Levin-Sagi, 2006). In five studies, we attempt to explore factors that may be important to understand the relationship between construal level and self-control. In Studies 1-3 we tested BMI as a moderator of an intervention designed to help participants construe temptations in high-level terms. We found that dieters with low (vs. high) BMI in the high-level construal intervention (vs. control) condition evidenced the greatest self-control success. In Study 4, we explored four potential factors (dieting self-efficacy, implicit theories of body weight, eating identities, and construal level knowledge) we thought might distinguish dieters with low vs. high BMI. For example, dieters with low BMI had higher dieting self-efficacy than dieters with high BMI. From this study we identified dieting self-efficacy as a potential mechanism worthy of further exploration. Using a longitudinal study design, in Study 5 we tested dieting self-efficacy as a mechanism, as well as our overall model for why dieters with different BMIs might differ in self-control success after a construal level manipulation. We did not find evidence for the overall model, however we found evidence for the impact of construal level on self-control as well as some evidence for the relationship between construal level and dieting-related self-efficacy in impacting self-control. Specifically, we found a pattern in which dieters with high dieting-related self-efficacy in the high-level construal condition (vs. dieters with low dieting-related self-efficacy or in the low-level construal condition) demonstrated the most self-control success. Overall, these five studies suggest the potential importance of factors, such as dieting-related self-efficacy, in understanding when construal level might more effectively impact self-control. The theoretical and practical implications of this work are discussed.
