This dissertation presents an in-depth account of the work of Isaac Leon Kandel. The information was obtained from available publications and from the archives of Teachers College, Columbia University; UNESCO in Paris, France; and the Hoover Institution on War, Revolution and Peace in Palo Alto, California, which houses his private papers. The central focus in this dissertation is Kandel's work in comparative and international education. Because of his unusually long career, and the prolific and comprehensive nature of his work, separate chapters were written which depict Kandel's work through the decades. Thus, one chapter examines his writings prior to and during the 1920s. Another chapter portrays his accomplishments during the 1930s, while yet another chapter scrutinizes his work in the decades of the 1940s, 1950s, and into the 1960s. In these chapters, Kandel's major works in comparative and international education are summarized and analyzed. A brief presentation of the important historical events of each particular decade is given, and his writings are then described within that context. A distinction is made in each of these chapters, as well as in other chapters, between Kandel's writings on comparative education and his writings on international education because he himself viewed the two as related but separate fields of study. In addition, there is a chapter which examines the basic elements of Kandel's theories and methods. This particular chapter provides a perspective for a better understanding of his major works which he produced in several decades of scholarship. Included also is a chapter delineating his many important contributions to comparative and international education. Since there is not a great deal of information available on Kandel's personal life, the first chapter of this dissertation presents a biographical portrait of him based mostly on his life as an educator. Both his historical outlook and his educational philosophy are included in different sections of this dissertation. Kandel's work in these areas relates to his work in comparative and international education, as well as to his total output as an educational writer. Appendices are included which demonstrate Kandel's broad involvement as a comparative and international educator.Subjects--Topical Terms:
