The colorful history and costumes of the La Negreria festival are little known outside of the central highlands of Peru. A blue velveteen jacket heavily embellished with metallic thread and wool embroidery of flowers, birds, and a 20th c. biplane inspired the investigation of into the history of the festival, it's origins, customs and present day practices. Examination of the materials, construction and embroidery techniques that make up the jacket informed a treatment that provided stabilization of extant embroidery, decorative trim, and other embellishments. A combination of conservation stitching and adhesive application were used to allow the jacket to be handled safely. Combining historical research and conservation, This paper contributes to the growing amount of information about the history, creation, and preservation of La Negreria costume.
