African American male student-athletes have not performed as well as other college student-athletes. African American male student-athletes poor academic performance has impacted their graduation success rate. The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore the various challenges encountered by African American male student-athletes. The qualitative research method used was a combination of the case study and the ethnographic approach. The ethnographic approach allowed for the examination of the African American student-athletes and their cultural settings. Meanwhile, the case study allowed for the interview of the 12 participants who were from the southeastern region of the U.S. The Critical Race Theory guided the investigation. The means of delivery was by phone and email. The data were collected, analyzed, and secured upon the completion of the study. The participants agreed that their life experiences before college did very little to prepare them for college. The results of this case study provided findings and highlighted a variety of reasons why African American male student-athletes struggle throughout their college years. Research has indicated that African American male student-athletes are lacking the necessary skills to be successful in college when they arrive on the campus. A sophisticated and unbalanced social and demographic makeup emerges when looking at the structure of primary schools through college. African American student-athletes do not have as many male teaching role models to relate to in the education profession as do other students. African American male teachers make up only 2.5 percent of pre-school through kindergarten teaching positions. Meanwhile, the African American male teacher makes up 21.5 percent of elementary and middle school teaching jobs. The data collected was relevant and aligned with previous research involving the African American male student-athletes.
