This study was designed to examine the perceptions of student-athletes, coaches, and athletic administrators, representing an HBCU Division I institution, on the use of servant leadership in the NCAA Life Skills Program. There has not been sufficient research focused on the role of servant leadership in intercollegiate athletics. The NCAA Life Skills Program was created to ensure student-athlete professional and academic development. The need to determine how servant leadership is used within the context of the program's core philosophies was examined from the perceptions of the participants. According to Burton and Welty-Peachey (2013), the servant leadership framework supports the overall objective of the NCAA when focusing on overall student-athlete development and academic success, but there is still an absence of literature to support how this applies to HBCU Division I institutions. The literature review examined use of servant leadership and other leadership components in intercollegiate athletics from athletic administrators; enhancing student-athlete opportunities in professional and academic development; academic performance implications for the academic progress rate; and the difference between student-athlete experiences at an HBCU and a Predominately White Institution (PWI). The participants indicted via their responses that servant leadership is a necessary component within the context of the NCAA Life Skills Program, and their insights also created a new paradigm on what being a servant leader actually means.
