This dissertation presents a new model of instructional design for online courses in higher education. The study was conducted over two phases: an initial creation and validation phase, and an application and evaluation phase. Shaped by the participatory cultures (Jenkins et al., 2006) framework, I present a design rubric outlining four types of participatory design goals. After refining the rubric based on expert feedback it was used to evaluate 17 existing online courses, by assessing how well each form of participatory culture was integrated based on the rubric's criteria. The observed design strategies are described and used to structure a design manual. As a final product of this study, the design manual can be used by instructional design teams to foster participatory learning in the online environment. Offering a new approach to online course design, this model aligns more closely with theories of distance education and adult learning, therefore providing a new set of strategies for enhancing online student experiences and outcomes.
